IPRC Microwave Separation Technology (MST) Overview

Industrial emulsions are stable, undesirable byproduct mixtures of oil, water and solids that occur in many industries. The byproduct causes a broad range of operating inefficiencies that limit plant production, add substantial hidden costs, and result in environmental wastes.

Microwave Separation Technology

  • easy to operate
  • requires little maintenance
  • returns benefits well in excess of its cost
The Problem The Solution
  • Emulsions exist throughout the crude oil industry and are a major waste and operational problem if not efficiently processed or managed.
  • Emulsion problems start small and grow large.
  • Low volume, easy-to-treat slop grows into high volume, hard-to-treat sludge.

MST will convert emulsions and sludge into clean oil and water.

MST will convert emulsions and sludge disposable solids.

Untreated at their source, emulsions:

  • Cause hydrocarbon loss / high wastewater loads
  • Foul process equipment / cause unit upsets
  • Displace fresh crude if recycled
  • Increase maintenance, corrosion, energy, and chemical costs
  • Tie-up tankage

Automated, continuous, compact and reliable operation requiring minimal manpower

A patented, cost-effective, easy to implement add-on technology

A proven new technology that provides new opportunities to refiners and producers

Imperial Petroleum Recovery Corporation (IPRC) developed and now markets Microwave Separation Technology (MST), a unique and revolutionary approach for destabilizing a broad range of emulsions so they can be separated quickly and efficiently than using conventional treatment and separation methods.

MST is a simple and automated add-on system that exploits microwave energy to selectively destabilize the polar and charged molecules that cause most waste emulsions to form.

emulsion breaking and separation system

Designed to achieve continuous and unattended separation of these emulsions, using little or no chemical with no additional staff, MST will yield clean oil, water and solids streams that can be easily handled using existing plant equipment.

For the first time, MST provides the technology to proactively address this difficult problem, close to the source when the emulsion is low in volume and easiest to treat, resulting in:

  • reduced environmental wastes
  • lower costs
  • increased production

How is MST available?

mst applicatorBoth configurations below can be either trailer or skid mounted, so they can be used at one or more locations.

  • stand alone microwave add-on to enhance the throughput and reliability of existing separators such as tanks and centrifuges
  • as a complete, integrated, turn-key microwave/separator system for new installations

MST was specifically developed for use in the crude oil production and refining industries. Additional development work, and the reemergence of alternative fuels due to the increase in crude oil prices, have suggested good potential for the benefits of MST in the tar sand, oil shale, petrochemical, environmental, marine and biodiesel industries.

Our success has led the company to establish biodiesel process optimization as a second primary focus of its business.
